Happy Easter

Spring has sprung and new doors

Well, I guess that Spring is finally here in Colorado. Of course we can still get snow this month and next month also. My ash tree by the house has some leaves and flowers on it. This is the first tree in our yard that has leaves all the others just have their buds.

It has tiny white flowers on it. Here are the close ups.

I can't wait for the flowers to start blooming. It looks like everything is coming back this year except for one bush. Last August we had a horrible hail storm that damaged my garden. I had just redone the whole front yard and put all new plants in June. I guess I got lucky that all I have to replace is one bush.

We had our new storm doors installed yesterday and they look great. I know that most people don't like security doors but I love the scrolls on these. The don't live in a bad area but my hubby likes to have the extra protection when I answer the door. You just never know these days.

Now for the after pictures. Here is the front door. It is not easy getting a good picture since we have a railing in front of the door.

I think they look much better than the white doors. Our next outdoor project is removing the ugly pergola and getting a roof put over the deck. We are still waiting for a couple of bids to come in so I don't know when it will get done. I just want it done before Winter so I don't have to shovel it anymore. The back of our house faces North so the snow stays unless you remove it.

Once the covered roof gets done I can finally get the deck decorated. I bought new cushions for the deck furniture and the furniture below the deck. I will also be repainting the furniture. We have had this furniture for over 10 years and it needs a facelift.

New doors and a cabinet

We are finally getting new storm doors for the house on Friday. I can't wait to get rid of these old ugly doors. They look awful. We are getting security doors that have a scroll pattern and are a bronze color. This is the front door.

As you can see Kolby has to get in the picture. We have no white on our house except for these doors. Even our vinyl windows are a cream color. Now for the back door on the deck.

This one is actually peeling and of course Kolby had to follow me. The last door is our walkout basement.

No Kolby in this picture. He ran out into the backyard to chase a squirrel. I have lived with these ugly doors for almost two years and can't wait to get rid of them. Hurry up Friday!!!

I found a little cabinet at Goodwill yesterday. I have been looking for something to put in the front closet that is off the ground since we have a floor vent under the window. It's funny how that when you don't need any furniture they have all kinds of great stuff and when you are looking for it they don't. Well yesterday I got lucky and found this cabinet (which is really a top to a hutch) but it will fit perfectly. It is 30 inches high, 34 inches wide, 10 inches deep and only cost 12.99 ( pretty good price for solid wood). And of course it is off the floor so it will clear the vent. Now all I need to do it get it fixed up. I am not sure if I want to paint it white or dark brown. I am going to try and get it done this weekend.

It doesn't need much work. It is in pretty good shape except for the top and it is missing two plugs on the left side. I was thinking about using it in the dining room by the windows but I think that area needs something a little bit bigger.

french country bench reveal

My mother gave me this bench over 20 years ago. My parents got this bench when they got married in 1944 so it is 70 years old. It looks like it was handmade. My mother always had a cushion on it with a ruffle to hide the sides. Since I am not that good at sewing I had my husband cut and install some molding to the front and the two sides. I bought two different pieces of molding since I needed four inches and most molding goes up to three inches. Here is the bench before the molding was applied.

The sides don't look as bad as the front. They aren't pieced together like the front is. Here is the moldings that I got at Home Depot.

I thought that the carved leaves would tie in with the carvings on the bench. Now here is it with the moldings.

Now the next step is to get it painted. This took me three coats of paint.

It is ready for the glaze and then polyurethane.

The seat cushion wasn't as easy to do as I thought it would be. I am not a great at sewing. I can make curtain panels and pillows but I decided to take the easy way out with this seat cushion. I just glued some foam to a piece of plywood and tacked down the material like I would with a dining room chair. It works for now. Maybe some day I will fiddle with sewing a cushion for it. So here is the final result.

I made the pillows myself as I love the rooster material. I got the cabinet at a thrift store in great condition so I don't have to do anything to it. The next thing to do is to decorate this area. That will be on the next post. I am thinking about putting some kind of shelf and hooks over by the door where I keep my shoes. This area looks pretty bare. Also I will be using a curtain panel that I bought at a thrift store to cover the window on the door.

I still have the area where the table and chairs are to finish. The table is a stone material so I will be covering it and the chairs to tie in with this area. Hopefully that will get done in the next couple of weeks. I am still helping the hubby with the garage cabinets so I don't have a lot of time to spare for the basement. I still have both of the bedrooms to finish. One of the bedrooms I am using for my craft room. It is a craft room/guest bedroom as it is almost as large as our master bedroom. Until next time.

Spring brunch

I bought these plates at TJ Maxx the other day. I thought they would be nice to use for Easter brunch for me and my hubby. We have a small table for two on the back deck which we use to eat on during the summer. I did a trial run to see what I could fit on the table. So here it is.

For some reason I have been attracted to blue and orange this Spring. I have always liked the colors but never really decorated with them much except for orange in the Fall.

I really love these plates. They only had three since they were on clearance so I bought two. I would like to have been able to get more.

I hope that Easter Sunday weather will be nicer than this Sunday. We are suppose to get between 3 to 6 inches of snow. Yuck! Just when you think Spring is really here we get a bit of Winter thrown in.

Country table...another project done

I bought this table from Hobby Lobby about 4 years ago. I don't have any before pictures but it was a light sage green color. I painted it a dark brown first than decided I wanted it lighter. So I painted it an off white. I attached an old window that I purchased from a second hand store. When we moved to this house one of the glass panels was broken so I removed all of the glass.

Today I finally got it decorated. It sits by the basement door that goes outside so it was covered with tons of stuff. Slowly I am getting what I call the extra wide hallway in the basement done. Here is what I accomplished today.

Even though our basement is a walkout it is a little dark in this area. I tried to use the flash but it made it look worse. Here are some closeups.

The next area I am going to tackle is across from this table. I am not sure why it is bumped in since you really don't have enough room here and it is right next to the door.

This bench is one of the first pieces of new furniture that my parents bought when they were first married. They got married in 1944 so this bench is 70 years old. I need to put a new cushion on it and I am thinking about painting it to match the rest of furniture around it.

Vintage sugar Easter eggs

I remembered that I have my mothers sugar Easter eggs. She would put these out every Easter when I was young. I was always fascinated with them. When I pulled them out today one didn't hold up to well. They have seen better days since she wrapped them with paper towels and put them in a box. The sugar bunny was completely broken to pieces. All of the remaining ones have some kind of damage to them. I decided to put them on a tray on the kitchen island. Here is what they look like.
